Qualification/ Education/ Training.

Nick has experience working for positive change with adult clients of all ages and life-stages and with a range of presenting difficulties.  Research tells us that the relationship between client and psychologist is a key ingredient in positive therapeutic outcomes.  Nick puts the therapeutic relationship front-and-centre in establishing a safe, compassionate, working partnership for change.

He draws on a range of evidence-based therapies, including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT) in order to best meet the individual needs of his clients.  Nick has a particular interest in Intensive Short Term Dynamic Psychotherapy (ISTDP), an approach which involves helping clients face and experience their emotions through the safety of the therapeutic relationship so that they no longer need to avoid their emotions in ways which cause suffering.

In a fast-paced, automated world it is all too easy to learn to ignore our emotional experience - particularly when our emotions our painful.  Yet it is our emotions which give us direction, connect us with people dear to us and go to the heart of our humanity.  Nick’s aim as a psychologist is to walk with his clients step-by-step to pay attention to their emotions so that they can increasingly reconnect with themselves and others in their lives.

In addition to his private practice, Nick also works as a psychologist in a private inpatient hospital.  He has previously worked as a school-teacher and a co-facilitator of parenting after separation classes and has a research background in Social Psychology and Cultural History.  These diverse roles have given him a strong appreciation not only for the way that our early experiences and social and cultural forces can shape our lives, but also for the uniqueness of our life-stories and of remarkable human courage, resilience and capacity for change in the face of pain and adversity.
